With that low of speed, you will always have trouble with over-reaction at the end of the pattern. Not saying a max length type layout won't work, but you may want to evaluate the opposite side of the spectrum too.
Max length can be accompanied with a quick, uncontrolled reaction once friction is encountered. This is usually accomplished by placing the pin far away from your PAP. For me, this would be in the 6" range.
Perhaps going the other way, placing the pin close to your PAP typically results in early roll, but also more control. This is especially helpful on shorter patterns where there is a lot of friction.
Just wanted to throw out a different option.
