I would like to have any driller weigh in on this, but I am particularly fishing for Justin Wyman's opinion:

I have a league player that has asked me to drill him a ball that he can play near or right of second arrow on our THS. He prefers to play straighter, as opposed to swinging the ball.

He has pretty good speed, but is fairly rev-dominant. I would approximate his axis point at/around 5 inches, with less than an inch up.

What would you recommend? My first impulse was a QZ2, with your favorite 70 by 2" by 40, with 4000 polish added.

I also like the look of the 60 by 2 7/8 by 40 you have in your Primal; I think we'd have to add PGP for that drill, also.

Would an RX1 be a consideration, too?

Thanks for your input.

Mick H

What lane surface?

The trick is going to be balancing the transitions to retain carry playing in the friction. The second transition will be key here.

My first instinct would be a large VAL angle, and low flaring pin position. I'd lean towards 5.5-5.75" as opposed to towards 2" to avoid weak 10s with an RX1O, QZ2, or GT1.

You could probably get away with a TV4 if you 4k and PG polish it, the inherent diff of this one would make me lean towards a 90x50@2.25". You'd really have to be careful of where the bowtie ends up.

P1 for length, P3 to smooth any of them.

Kind of a shot in the dark with the limited info, but a good place to start.

Thanks for the advice. Clearly, I'm going to catalog his pap and current ball setups using dual angle descriptions. I'll update the progress here. I think I'll still go with the QZ2, as price is a consideration as well. He has been used to getting pretty cut rate prices at Nationals from the Visionary booth, and I want to prove that spending the money with me, who knows his game and is vested in his success is better than saving $40 from a guy who could give two squirts after all is said and done.
BTW, we have LaneSheild for our house surface. Lots of hook if they are clean, and food skid in the oil. Harder than guardian, but probably not quite as nice as HPL.
Thanks

My thought would be RX1 in this instance, but if the QZ2 hooks too much, there is another arsenal option.

That may change based on his specs. Tilt will be a major factor.

I'm not a ball driller, so sorry for chiming in. I'm just wondering... how come no one ever talks about the qz1? I'd add it to the list of possibilities for this guy, as opposed to the qz2, which actually hooks less, with the 4000/shine preparation. Just my 2 cents!

I think that QZ2 is my knee-jerk first choice, if only to save me some time in the spinner box later. I think 4000 w/polish is the right surface choice.

Plus, the QZ2 is a much better looking ball on top of that.

QZ1 purple would be way too early for playing the zone he's hoping to camp out in, and QZ1 cranberry would be too inherently strong in the midlane. Either choice would work, but would need a different surface prep that OOB.

I'm afraid of the RX1 being too weak. I think the Quadfire core represents more flexibility and range of drill possibilities.

The cover is the primary factor, but I can only advise based on what information is presented.

You are fortunately there and can see his reaction and execution, trust that.

I plan to drill this ball tomorrow, so I'll post results.

On a side note, I used one of Justin's drilling suggestions for a Cruel from another thread to punch one up for a player here that is super speed dominant (60x3x35). Added a p2 to keep statics legal, and with a touch of 1000 abralon, it flat out hooked his Invasion. NOT EVEN CLOSE! He likes to play 2nd arrow, struggles on the fresh, and thrives as the track dries up (he can really fire rockets at will; it's his comfort zone).

If there is anyone out there struggling with a speed dominant customer, the Cruel will deliver!

Thanks Justin!

ended up drilling a QZ2, 70 by 5 1/2 by 35, no hole needed. I talked with him, and he felt he wanted 3 more games under his belt before deciding on a hole for reaction shaping. It definitely lets him play to the right all night long.

Yea this is me exactly, stay right, throw it over the arrow and let the ball do all the work. I tried to fight it to start with then slowed down and it came right to the pocket.
