I ordered a RX1 and am looking forward to receiving it. I'm still up in the air on how I'm going to have it drilled. I want to use it on the Cheetah pattern and on the fairly dry lanes I bowl Fall leagues on....sometimes they're very dry on the outside and backends. I think I want it drilled to have the most agressive backend possible. Any suggestions? Would the length and leverage layout work? Oh yeah, I'm right handed, speed is about 16 mph, and about 325rpms with a high track (pap approx. 5").

Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

I have similar stats as you & I drilled mine 50x4x45. It needs a wt. hole but I have not put one in yet, which would be in the P2 or P3 location. If I keep near or in the dry it will get down the lane BUT has a stronger than anticipated move off the pattern. Revs up real nice & hits very well. May drill my next one weaker OR shine the heck out of this one to see the different in reaction. Though to give you a finite answer w/o seeing you bowl but I hope this helps. Take care & welcome to Motiv-nation.

The only issue with drilling it for the most aggressive backend, is that generally implies a fast response to friction. You may want to consider a layout that will provide a more gradual reaction to friction as it will be more usable and easier to carry on the dry stuff. You can make the ball cover boards, but an angular reaction on dry lanes isn't always the best way to score.

Thanks for the responses. Justin, what type of drilling would you suggest? I know you can really get too specific without seeing me bowl and everything, but I was just looking for a general idea to take to the proshop.

Based on the accuracy of your provided information, at 16mph and 325rpm you are slightly speed dominant.

The trick is, you can always make a ball a bit less angular through hole placement and surface.

I'd start with a 3.5"-4" pin, punch it 50x30@4.75", box surface. Throw it with no hole to see what happens. P1 hole if you want a board or 2 more backend, P3 if you want it a bit smoother. If it is the right shape but a tick finicky at the spot, try 2k Abralon before a hole, assuming it is legal of course.

Thanks for the info and advice. I'm fairly new to the drilling information and especially so to the dual angle stuff. I'm not even sure that any of the guys at the proshops in my area are that well versed in the new technology, but I'm not really in a position to know or judge that. I might try a different proshop to see how they do with it. I've been using one proshop for all of my ball drilling, and (like I said) I don't know enough to be able to judge their work. The fact that they've never watched me throw the ball makes me a little suspect. I'll talk to the guy at the lanes where I bowl league and see what he has to say. I don't know if he carries Motiv or not (different guy just took over from another local shop).

Has anyone ever tried a 20x1.5x70 layout, on any ball?

The theory would imply early roll, low flare, slow revving at the break point. Just wondering if that was the chase or if it's RG sensitive, for instance low RG balls would rev faster and break harder, and high RG balls would lope more and break more gradual.

Just wondering,

Michael

Thanks for the info. That gives me a idea of how to lay the two out.

Yeah after league I took both down some. The boomer is now 1000 grit, and the 70x4.5x30 is 800 grit. Deffinitly helped. I'll keep tweeking like I do till I get the reaction I want.

Well, I finally got my Recon, but due to an injured middle finger I haven't taken it in to get it drilled yet. I had to sit and watch my teammates bowl our first week on the Viper!!
I really liked the reaction of your 70x4.5x30 drilled ball (before your surface alterations of course). Why did you need to change the surface? I'm just curious, because I was thinking with the length this ball should have I would want to drill it for a strong backend reaction.
I can't wait to try it out if my finger cooperates. I know it should be great on the Cheetah (three weeks away), but how do you guys think it would be on the Viper?
