The MOTIV Ball Guide offers a quick overview of our ball lineup and how the balls relate to one another. The top of the Ball Guide shows balls that are stronger and more aggressive, ideal for where there are higher oil volumes and lower friction conditions. As you move toward lower oil volumes and higher friction conditions, the balls gradually get weaker. The left side of the chart shows balls that have a smoother, arcing motion.The balls get more angular as you move further toward the right side of the chart, with the furthest right column showing the most angular balls in our line.
The heatmap shown on the MOTIV Ball Guide helps you understand lane friction at a glance. For example, the darker blue shaded area showcases very strong bowling balls that are typically best used on fresh, high-volume patterns where there is little friction. As bowling balls deplete the oil, friction builds, bringing balls into play that are positioned in other color zones. These transitions continue as we move down the chart into lower-volume oil patterns.
The MOTIV Bowling Ball line is always evolving and improving. As new ball releases come out, these new releases may be better suited for a particular Ball Guide position than a ball in the current spot. The Ball Guide helps to show how balls relate to those around them.
Heavy oil patterns produce a low friction environment. This makes it very difficult to create hook, so a stronger bowling ball is required. On fresh heavy oil conditions, a “smooth” ball provides traction. As the pattern breaks down, more “angular” balls come into play.
View BallsOil patterns created with a low volume of oil result in a high-friction environment. A worn-down house shot (standard pattern) could also be described as light oil because the lanes get drier with use.
View BallsSmooth bowling balls are often used in fresh oil conditions. They begin to hook earlier and provide a more controlled motion down-lane. They are sanded to create traction. Smooth motion can also be bowler preference. Some like the controlled, smooth hook because it is more predictable.
View BallsAngular balls are needed as oil patterns get worn and break down. When friction increases, angular balls are used because they retain energy and striking power. Often polished, angular balls skid further, respond to friction faster, and have a more abrupt hook down-lane.
